In Search of Happy Feet

When All Else Fails…

Face the Truth Straight in the Eyes

Two weeks ago, I announced on Happy Feet in the Netherlands FB page, that I will be sharing a blog with the topic, "Where are you going Happy Feet!?!"

It should have been a blog sharing the details of my running calendar after the Summer holidays, my training during the Summer break and what goals I am focusing on.

Alas, I was unable to write it. Alas, I have been unable to run for 17 days now.  Alas, I find myself again, where I was 3 years ago before I begun with running: at the beginning.

“We search for happiness everywhere, but we are like Tolstoy's fabled beggar who spent his life sitting on a pot of gold, under him the whole time. Your treasure--your perfection--is within you already. But to claim it, you must leave the buy commotion of the mind and abandon the desires of the ego and enter into the silence of the heart.”

After the Finish lines…

Back to Yourself

There is no other way to say it but simple, direct and honest, "I lost my Happy Feet!" after running my last 10K.

a page I follow to gain a better perspective of living a life with cycles of depression

Currently, nothing is truly motivating me to take the first step I need to do.

So, I result to this: confessional blog.  A blog to release thoughts, unearthing in the process what is holding me back.

It is actually nothing, and so many things.

You know? My same old…same old…

It is about me hindering myself; it is about me being in my own way.

Reading a blog I saw pass by while on Twitter motivated me to write this blog.  A blog to help myself get going.

Below is the comment I left on that post.

Thanks to your post on Twitter, Katie I was able to read this blog -Blogging & Belonging by Mom's Little Running Buddies (link edited in for this post) . I needed to read your inspiring words, specially today (re-starting my training for Amsterdam marathon).

This is why I love social media, it connects people sharing the same convictions, same passion. In the process empowering each other. It reminds me that social media like anything else when used in moderation and for social good is truly worthwhile.

I used to work in the world of mass media (television, advertising, etc). The freedom of self-expression I feel with blogging is something I have not felt in my profession. I do not want to lose that freedom but do constantly feel the pressure of conforming.

Happily enough, I overcome it every time!

How can we enrich each other's lives if we give up our individuality? This is what I tell myself - my mantra - when I feel doubts and fears over sharing my thoughts, point of view, experiences.

- end of comment -

Often times, the interaction with others (on the web or IRL) are exactly what you need to remind yourself who you are, what you believe in, what you stand for and what your true purpose is.

After finishing my 2nd half-marathon this year

Luxembourg 2014

“The human race is a monotonous affair. Most people spend the greatest part of their time working in order to live, and what little freedom remains so fills them with fear that they seek out any and every means to be rid of it.”

Who am I? What do I believe in?

Live. Love. Run.

Simple yet made complicated when you deal with bipolar disorder.  When your own mind is your worst enemy.

I refuse to be a victim of my affliction.

I can talk in details about how painful it is to go through each cycle, and how frustrating it is to climb up again after you almost reach the "top" (normal daily existence), and have to pick yourself up from "the deep end"(mental and physical state of paralysis).

But time is better spent than doing that. I learned this the hard way.

It is challenging, but being positive, seeing the positive of one's life no matter what the circumstances  are, is truly a rewarding and worthwhile endeavor.

Life's quality has enormously improved since I was officially diagnosed of being manic-depressive.

There is power in having a name for what you are fighting against.  I have fought hard to not give up fighting.

Looking back makes me feel proud of what I have achieved with the help of my family and friends.

My own enemy is myself, and with this knowledge, I am more prepared and equipped to deal with each personal battle. In principle.

Yet when I am ambushed by myself, by my mind, I remain shaken to the core.

My mind uses "time" as a weapon to make me surrender.

It tells me I've lost precious time I will no longer be able to regain; it tells me, I do not have time enough to do all the things I need to do, and no matter what I do, I do not have the luxury of time to overcome the challenges of my disorder.

These stream of thoughts have paralyzed me so often in the past.

Still, I fought, I fight, and I will remain fighting.

I believe exercising the freedom of self-expression and creativity empowers us.  For me personally, they both liberate my mind, body and spirit. I need to exercise both of them, as often as I need physical exercise for my body.

The 8 K was the first real goal

when I finally made the first steps towards my childhood dream
of being a runner
on the 8th of August 2011

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

What do I stand for? What is my purpose?

Live a life of quality in spite of disabilities…empower others to do the same...

This leads me back to the title, to the rhetorical question of the blog I wanted to write  2 weeks ago but could not: "Where are you going Happy Feet!?!"

Recently, I created an account on about.me. I came across this website in 2012, while checking out the profile of someone, who was a prospective team member for my first marathon relay team.

about.me

Back then, I did not feel strong and confident enough to create an account representing, who I am, what I stand for.

It would have been easy just to simply create an account, fill in the blanks like everyone does; it is after all "only" a web page.  But it would not have felt right, I would not have felt genuine since I did not have full conviction behind the words: runner, blogger, mental health advocate, then,  as I do now.

Expressing it now and not then is just perfect.

I love running, and the power it has to consistently change my life for the better.

My love for running is even deeper through the knowledge, that in my simple ways, I change the life of others as well.

Wear your smile, wear your shoes and find your OWN happy!

I do not want to forget that I  run and write about running for people like me.

People like me, who would like to run long distances but are already happy, when they can bring themselves to be outdoors.

During depressive cycle the distance between the sofa and the front door can be an ultra-distance.

People like me, who would like run fast but are already happy, when they can finish a race within the time limit.

Running within the time limit is fast for those, who've overcome depressive cycle; it is like being Usain Bolt on world record breaking day.

People like me, who would like to run to be amongst others who share the passion.

Running in with other fellow runners to experience the sense of belonging, specially when your mind tries to imprison you again, and again, and again…

People like me, who will never give up, and need others to remind them that their is strength in the spirit.

So, where am I going? On the road to completely accepting myself, my individuality, and inspiring others to do so themselves - embrace their uniqueness, with all the flaws and all that potential to be the best that they can be.

These thoughts, the released and yet to be released gives me strength to lace up my shoes.

- Edit 17.07.14 After writing this blog, I created Happy Feet'S Miles blog

This blog is an idea I had since the beginning of this year -  blog about my effort to be fit and healthy in a journal form, separate from this blog.

I aim to help and motivate others, as I personally hope, that my journaling will help and motivate myself.

I would like to use this blog to hold myself accountable for all my actions, and to aid me in being consistent with pursuing my goals.

Most of all have a clear document for myself in times of mental struggle to see things objectively.

Why another (running) blog and how is it different from Happy Feet in the Netherlands, and Happy Feet of a Couch Potato?  While the latter former would be a "magazine", and the latter would be a (draft of the) "book" of my running life, Happy Feet'S Miles would be the "journal".

Each one serves a purpose, and it gives my mind the freedom it needs, and not feel restricted.  My spirit and body are free, when my mind is free...

This afternoon, I wrote the first post.  It is through writing, "In Search of Happy Feet" that I was able to make the next step… -

Every Blog is A Beginning : A bientôt, Paris!!!

This post is the 3rd entry to the blog series Every Blog is A Beginning...

There are many reasons I began this blog series, one of them is to be able to put into words thoughts I would like to express to give myself strength to let go, move one, that I can focus on working on new goals instead of obsessing about unfullfilled ones.

This coming Sunday it will be a year ago that I finished the Marathon in Paris.

On Sunday, I will not be in Paris even though I ache to be there to fulfill an unfinished marathon business.

at the Paris Marathon Expo 2013
Paris Marathon 2013 medal
very happy to have the finisher's medal

When I talk about my first two marathons I say, I ran the Berlin and Amsterdam marathons respectively. When I talk about Paris, I say, I finished it.

Left: Amsterdam Marathon  2012 medal
Right: Berlin Marathon 2012 medal

Berlin & Amsterdam Marathon medals and bibs
both resting on my
Amsterdam Running Junkies running shirt
The group inspired and motivated me to reach my dream and fulfill my goal
to reach my back to back marathon dream in 2012

Why the marathon semantics? It is because I walked the last 5 kilometers of the marathon.  Perhaps a few minutes before I reached the finish line with a fellow marathoner (who by then almost felt like my best friend!), they removed the time recording mat.

Even though I got my finisher's medal, my time was not registered, and therefore I am not an official finisher of Paris marathon on records.

It took a while for me to own what actually is a personal achievement because of this technical detail.

Being told by many that it was amazing how I was able to finish in spite of the stress we had, and that I did this with  little to no training at all did not appease my mind to completely embrace the success of the completion.

There are many lessons learned a year after the Paris marathon.

Even though I am aware, that my bipolar disorder is what makes me want to do many things at once even under so much stress to catch up on what I feel are lost time (due to depression), and "logically"with knowledge I essentially can prevent myself from following this unhealthy pattern, I realised I need more help to do so, and I cannot do it by myself.

If only for that wisdom, I can truly say, the "pain in Paris" was worth it!

I am still far from leading an ideal healthy life, physically and mentally but I am never giving up trying to improve the quality of life for me and my family.

It's the adventure of a lifetime! :)

Next time I ran in Paris, whether a full marathon a shorter distance,  or perhaps even simply for the fun of it, one thing is for sure, I will no longer be racing with myself for lost time but enjoying every minute of  a run.

A bientôt, Paris!!!

Every Blog is A Beginning : 365 Stories from Happy Feet

image originally shared on the blog
Home in Luxembourg for the Half Marathon - 7th of June,2013

Be brave enough to live life creatively. The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You can’t get there by bus, only by hard work and risk and by not quite knowing what you are doing. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover will be yourself.

- Alan Alda

Since finishing the half in the Hague, I have been silent on this blog.  I have yet again let  life circumstances "silence my inner voice".

This is My Why for Running.

A very exhilarating experience always seems to be followed by sinking in the depths...

Most of you, who have been following me in my blogging journey know that I deal with a bipolar disorder

5 out of 8 years of my total blogging years were "anonymous years". I wrote behind a pseudonym. Writing initially for catharsis, which led to meeting many beautiful souls, who helped me recognize that I am not alone, and should not be alone in my struggles.

It was not until 2 years of living in the Netherlands, that I decided I would like to write under my own name. Share the face behind the story.

from the blog Smile - 22nd of April, 2011

I felt stronger, than I have ever felt in years.

More confident, more hopeful that I can live a happy life even though I am still dealing with recurring debilitating depression.  A state that not only hugely affected  my life but the quality of life of my family.

It might sound  preposterous, but the huge motivation for this decision - publicly write my personal thoughts and experiences - was the need  to help others, who goes through the same struggles, I do.

It is my hope that I can empower others with honest writing about how I am working on living  a life of quality in spite of anxiety and panic attacks.  Both disorders born out of going through  numerous cycles of depression.

Life is fleeting. Blogging has offered me a way to capture precious fleeting moments, and record my life to make me see, clearly, in vivid colour, how rich it is and that the good times outweighs the bad times.

Specially when I am unable too reasonably think because my disorder puts my mind in a haze of confusion, fears, doubts and paralysis.

from the blog Finding Faulkner - 4th of January, 2011

With or without bipolar disorder, the best way to live is: one day at a time.

I would no longer let my disorder silence my inner voice.  I would not want to miss any day of this fleeting life.

In this spirit, I am committing myself to writing a blog a day 365 blogs in this series (EDIT: 22.04.14), beginning with this blog:

A 365 Story Behind the Mind of Happy Feet. (title edit 10:40 PM: Every Blog is A Beginning  (1/365) : 365 Stories Behind the Mind of Happy Feet)  (title edit 22.04.14 - Every Blog is A Beginning : 365 Stories from Happy Feet)

Each story will be a day in the life; it can at times be a story of struggle or often stories of triumphs over the self.  There will be mundane stories, there will be thought provoking stories...

Most importantly, they will be stories about never giving up. Always moving forward with Happy Feet...

I leave you with a quote I chose for a blog, which I wrote 3 years ago entitled Finding Faulkner.

May it inspire you as it has inspired me.

"I decline to accept the end of man... I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among the creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet's, the writer's, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail."

2013: A Year of Thanks. A Positive Year.

A personal gift from K. of Lunatik Athletiks
“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.”
Herman Melville

Today, after lunch our youngest, excitedly brought in the mail.

She loves bringing in the mail.  With twinkle in her eyes, she announced, "Christmas cards!" as she held out with her little hands envelopes of assorted sizes and colours.

One of them was from Kelly of  Lunatik Athletiks whom I met via social media channels and worked together with for  #Crazy4Running campaign.

Her season's greetings (and the very thoughtful gift!!!!!!!!!) was extra special for me because through her generous spirit and lovely gesture, she gave me the a sign I was searching for.

(Excerpt of what was written in K's Holidays greetings below:

The bracelet is made of red agate, yellow tiger eye, and blue agate.

Tiger eye is a very protective stone.  It has powerful, dynamic energy with a watchful quality.

Tiger eye can help clear confusion and attract a more clear and balanced state of mind.

The Hamsa hand charm: draws positive energy, happiness, riches and health.

Wishing you the Best Christmas & a blessed Holiday.
)
A snapshot of me wearing the bracelet to mark and preserve the special occasion.
If you look closely on the left side of the picture are the happy toes of our youngest.
It made me smile, and I thought I should leave it, and not edit it out. :)

I have been strongly contemplating on giving up blogging, social media and the internet in general for  the last couple of months.

There are numerous reasons why I felt the strong need to do this.  One single powerful reason, which have kept me going, in sharing my struggles and triumphs for the world to read:

I want to contribute in making a positive change in the world, in my own simple way; I know I am not alone,  through the people I have met, and continue to meet. People who makes a positive difference in life, in their own simple way. People who gives one hope that the world is a brighter place with them in it.

These people are long time friends, or friends I met only recently but feel deep connection with, who I feel I have known all my life.   Many of them, I am limited to staying in touch online because oceans, or continents separates us.  The internet magically keeps us connected.

Having them in my life is a constant positive reminder to focus on the good things life brings.  They give me strength to face and let go of the not so positive things, that belongs to life, too.

2013. A most challenging year to date has been a positive year thanks to all the positivity of these people.

People like me, who deals with manic depression can easily fall into isolation. Thanks to the positive power of the internet, these situation has become less and less for me through the years.

Internet (blogging, writing, sharing) + running = Happy Feet. :)

A collage of gratefulness and empowerment.

Today, I also received something very positive in my regular email  from Runner's World. I took it as another positive sign, showing the path for 2014. The message is one of my most favourite quote:

Motivation, I believe comes from something powerful from within  all of us (our belief in ourselves, in our strength), and from without (positive people, meaningful events), if we let them be a part of us.
Running Bruggenloop 2013
Blogging  helps me in creating and keeping good habits. It keeps me focused.

The people that came into my life through blogging reminds me of this, specially at times I need it most.

Berlin Marathon 2012

I thank each and everyone of you, whom I've met before I started blogging (you planted seed of positivity in me), whom I met through blogging (you remind me of the positive spirit) and who I have yet to meet ( you make me look forward with hope).

Thank you for inspiring, and keeping the inspiring spirit alive.

Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year full of positive energy!

Monday Motivation: Dream On!

They say, most runners experience an emotional dip after reaching a goal.

Since running the half-marathon in  Luxembourg , I've been struggling with how to motivate myself to continue my 2013 personal running project(s).

#TRIOfor2013 (run three marathons within a year) is the major goal of this year's running goals, and has so far not been going according to plan.

#TRIOfor2013 - Paris, Luxembourg, Berlin

Paris 2013- memorable first Spring marathon experience because of a beautiful course, and the fact that I almost gave up!
We went to Paris knowing, that I was not prepared to run the full, and I only wanted to at least run the half.
But half-way, I could not stop myself from finishing the full course.
It was sheer determination that made me finish the race with the knowledge, that I would not be on the official list, and not get a medal (and oh how I love getting medal).

I met many awesome runners along the way, who reminded me in the first place why I run:
to overcome hurdles I put in front of myself.
In the end I was not on the official list of finishers (minutes before I crossed the finish line, they took the mat to register my finishing time) but was graciously rewarded with the medal for finishing!

Luxembourg 2013 - originally planned to run the full, and later I made an obvious decision to run the half.
Very happy with being able to make that decision in time, and happy that I did not give up easily.

My search for alternative marathon, preferably all after Berlin Marathon (29th of September), are beset with worries, and doubts.

So here I am, reminding myself that I should crush those worries and doubts, and FOCUS on achieving what I set out to do.

Berlin & Amsterdam aka My Back 2 Back Marathons 2012! I love looking at these medals because they symbolize for me. that you can realize dreams if you: believe, focus and work hard to achieve it.

How do you crush negative feelings and thoughts?

One baby step at a time.

My first step is with this blog: acknowledging my doubts, fears and worries.

Tomorrow, the next step: plan of action.

Crushing Depression With Each Race, Each Run (Luxembourg Half-Marathon)

Sometimes I can't believe my eyes when I see pictures of myself, specially after a race. Is this really me, I ask myself. Yes, it is, I tell myself!

I would not have thought it possible 7 years ago, that I could look happy, strong and free, as I do now.

I did it!
Finished my first half-marathon in Luxembourg!
Got the bling, and very happy about the decision I made: Tuesday: Decision Time!
09.06.13 00:40
In 2006, I suffered from a nervous breakdown after years and years of cycles of chronic depression.

There were many times I gave up on life. I never thought I would ever have enough courage to share this, what I share in words, to my family, to close friends, and on my blogs for those readers, whom I aim to reach. People like me.

People like me, who've suffered from depression, and thought they are alone, and that somehow they will never ever recover from it.

This was taken before I picked up my starting number, when I was still contemplating on running the full instead of the half! 08.06.13 14.09

When I share my stories,my purpose is not to be pitied for what I've gone through, nor earn compliments for what I've "achieved" in my fight against this disorder.

I am writing what I've been through to give others hope and courage to never ever give up on life.

Everyone goes through life challenges, and everyone at one point in their lives felt, that life is unfair.

Specially those who goes through life challenges weakened with depression, and can't even attend to their basic needs.

My body was grateful, that I made a reasonable decision and ran the half!
09.06.13 00:40
A sad silent statistic of people in the world, who've suffered and still suffer from depression have a hard time talking about this mental disorder.

Sadly, I am not the first and will not be the last, who will talk about how this disorder can take away a lot from your life.

My fervent wish is that I certainly will not be the last to talk about how one can overcome depression, and live a life of quality.

Episodes of depression might not completely go away for most people but the knowledge of how to cope with it, how to prevent it, how to take care of one's well being, that the frequency will be reduced effectively is more worth than any wealth in the world.

My medal of valour. :D
Luxembourg (Half-) Marathon can definitely be counted as one of the best ultimate runner's challenge.
I'll be back to conquer the full - one day!

Most importantly it is important to know how to ask for help, when you no longer know what to do.

No one is ever alone
. Being alone is a choice one makes, and it's not ever a man's fate.

Depression can make you feel alone, make you feel, that loneliness so painfully.

But you should never let depression convince you, that you are alone, that the pain one feels in the moment is ever-lasting.

There is always a choice with depression.

The choice to fight it (over and over and over again), conquer it and live, a life that is full.

Thursday's Thought: Taking The Stress Off Running

Aaaaaaah, getting  very excited!!! :D Blue is my ultimate favourite colour. :)

Visualising how I would be happily running the last meters to the finish line on these carpets!

The past weeks have been very stressful, and I was personally having a very hard time.

Until I forced the circling in the same self-defeating thoughts, focused inwardly, and posed these  questions:

Who am I as a runner?
Why do I run?
Where would I like to be years from now as a runner?

The answers gave me a lot of peace.

It is all about self acceptance, finding inner strength, and spreading the positive inspiration, one receives.

Thank you all for being such a greet support - IRL and online!

Here is to good stories to share, after the Luxembourg marathon weekend. :)

Tuesday: Decision Time!

Well, at least the half of it!

I've come to a decision - a very hard one for me - that I have to give up on the #TRIOfor2013   project - running 3 full marathons within a year - as I had envisioned it (Paris-Luxembourg-Berlin).

This Sunday, instead of running the full marathon in Luxembourg, I'll be running the half because like in Paris, I was not able to prepare like I planned.  Now, I am facing the truth, I have to admit, that I am suffering from PTSD (you could read about the background: here); it is something I have to deal with counselling, and the simple admission is a relief.

I can go on and plan two alternative marathons, which I can prepare better for after I have seen the doctor to help me sleep better, and get my anxiety and panic attacks in check.

Paris 2013- memorable first Spring marathon experience because of a beautiful course, and the fact that I almost gave up!
We went to Paris knowing, that I was not prepared to run the full, and I only wanted to at least run the half.
But half-way, I could not stop myself from finishing the full course.

Yes dear family, friends, fellow running enthusiast, and loyal followers, and those I have yet to meet - I am not that stubborn, reckless and crazy as I seem to come over with my projects and how I execute them.

If you've read my Blogathon 2013 posts Day 1 - Introducing: This Runner, Day 2 - Drie Dorpenloop 2013: Running Home, Day 3 - This Runner: 22 Months Later, perhaps you will have a picture of who I am as a runner, why I run, and the what  motivates me to run, and my passion for marathons.

After the Luxembourg marathon weekend, I will reveal my two alternative marathons. I chose to do 2 - one to replace Luxembourg and the other Paris - to give me an official closure for the project; even though I finished Paris I am not on the offical list of finisher, and it nags on me. To silence the nagging, I'll try to replace it with a lot of running! :D
